The Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles was established in the year 1979, to "protect and promote the production in handloom and textile industry in the state. It has the overall responsibility to support the areas of infrastructure, marketing, human resource development, conservation and preservation of traditional skills and products, finance, design input, raw material supply, export, modernisation, welfare programmes, and price stability to equip the segment to compete in a globalised environment.
The policies and schemes of the Department are carried out through District Industries Centres (DICs) which in turn percolated and implemented through circle offices. The General Manager of, the District Industries Centre is the Registrar of Primary Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies. A total of 54 circle offices functioning in the state headed by the Assistant Registrars (AR) and Deputy Registrar (DR). There are 16 Deputy Registrars 4 Assistant Registrars and 60 Senior Co-operative Inspectors and 51 Junior Co-operative Inspectors working for the development of the Handloom and Powerloom sector in the State.
