The ‘Environment Department’ came into existence in the year 2006 by delinking the subject Environment from the Science, Technology & Environment Department. The primary concerns of the Department are the implementation of policies and programmes relating to the conservation of the State’s natural resources, its biodiversity and the prevention and abatement of pollution. While implementing these policies and programmes, the Department is guided by the principle of sustainable development and enhancement of human well-being.
The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) under the Environment Department was constituted in December 2010. The Directorate is the nodal agency in the administrative structure of the Environment Department for the planning, promotion, coordination and overseeing the implementation of Central and State environmental protection and conservation policies and programmes. The Directorate also serves as the nodal agency in formulating climate change-related schemes, plans, programmes and their execution. ..
