The Beacon of Trivandrum: Vizhinjam Lighthouse
The Vizhinjam Lighthouse stands as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. Located in Kovalam, the lighthouse attracts tourists from all over the world. A cylindrical structure, the lighthouse reaches a height of 187 ft and features distinctive red and white bands painted on its exterior. Overlooking the vast sea, the Vizhinjam lighthouse gives every visitor a magnificent, panoramic view.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1972 to aid trade ships passing by, as Vizhinjam was a busy seaport at that time.
“when you reach the top, you see it – the breathtaking view of the wide-open sea and if it is in the evening, you can see the sun setting into the horizon.”
Climbing to the Sky: A Moment of Anticipation
I visited the lighthouse only once, but that single trip was enough to truly witness its beauty. From the outside, it might not look like much. However, your anticipation builds as you enter and climb the winding flight of stairs.
Finally, when you reach the top, the view hits you—the breathtaking sight of the wide-open sea. If you time your visit for the evening, you can watch the sun setting right into the horizon. The sky and the sea transform into a stunning golden-orange color, enchanting everyone who watches the spectacle.
The Unforgettable Sunset Experience
It was a busy evening when I went to the lighthouse. Since it was my first time, I didn’t have high expectations. Yet, as I reached the top, the view took my breath away. I’m sure everyone there felt the same way.
Different people from various places had gathered to see the sunset. I saw couples, families, individuals, and even aged people enjoying the view. Nature seemed to have an unexplainable effect on people. It was as if the light from the horizon drew them all to the top of the lighthouse.
From this vantage point, you can see almost the entire beach, and if you look closely, you might spot tiny, small beaches tucked in between the big rocks. It was truly beautiful and unforgettable. I have been to many beaches in my life, but this was the first time I had climbed a lighthouse.
I must say, most of us go to the beach and forget to wander around and see what wonders the place holds. We humans possess the thirst to travel and see the wonders the world offers, but often overlook the man-made marvels that our own kind has built for us.
