Listing Description
The history of Vocational Higher Secondary Education in Kerala started in 1983 with 19 schools as an experiment. During the latest expansion in 2007, it extended to 389 schools and has a strength of 33000 students. The vocational education system was changed to a higher secondary system in 1999 as a part of incorporating Pre-Degree courses at the school level and conducted as two courses. In Kerala, it was implemented at the Higher Secondary Level by the Department of General Education(Vocational wing). National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) was rolled out in the State at 35 VHS Schools in 2018-19 and 101 VHS Schools in 2019-20. The new scheme has been extended to all 389 Higher Secondary(Vocational) Schools including Aided Higher Secondary (vocational) Schools since the academic year 2020-21. Presently the Department of General Education (Vocational wing) offers 1101 courses in 48 different Job Roles under 21 Sector Skill Councils.
